The Akita breed evolved on Hokkaido Island where he was first used to hunt mountain bear and boar. He was later “pitted” in arenas that tested strength and courage.  Today’s Akita retains a dominant character.  Much spiritual and cultural significance is attached to the Akita; he is a symbol of health and long life. 

Akita Coat, Color, Care: His big, off standing, Arctic-type coat is easy care except when shedding, during which time he will require regular combing to remove loose hair.   The Akita comes in white or any brilliant color, with or without white markings or dark face mask.

Akita Personality: Dignified and reserved, often described as cat-like, the Akita is exceptionally clean and having lived in palaces and rice paper huts, he’s safe with priceless carpets and antiques.  The breed is virtually silent but when an Akita speaks, others pay attention! 

Exercise Requirements: Akitas are big dogs and while quiet and laid back, they do require regular outdoor exercise.  A fenced yard will do but adult Akitas don’t chase balls or self-exercise so jogging beside a bicycle may be a better option to keep him fit, in good muscle tone, and prevent nervous habits such as chewing or licking.

Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia and luxating patella (knees) are common with large, fast growing breeds but can be modified by diet.  Eye problems (entropion, ectropion, occasional cases of PRA) and other disorders are considered hereditary and puppies should be from cleared parents.  Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects.  A partially home cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
