The Alaskan Malamute evolved along Kotzebue Sound in what is now Alaska. Named after a native Innuit tribe, Malamutes predate our history but were used as sledge dogs then and now. The sport of sled racing may have saved the breed from extinction during the early 1920s, for which movie producers and modern families are grateful!
Alaskan Malamute Coat, Color, Care: This breed has a harsh off-standing guard coat with thick protective undercoat. His wolfish color ranges from light gray to black or dark reddish black with white underbody. The Malamute coat is non-matting and easy care except when shedding. The “hair blizzard” requires rigorous daily combing.
Alaskan Malamute Personality: The Malamute can become overly dominant but properly raised, is an affectionate, friendly dog which, although loyal to his owner, is accepting of everyone. He gives the appearance of stolid dignity but in private, is playful and inventive with owners. He tolerates other dogs but due to his size and weight, is best suited for families with older children.
Exercise Requirements: As one would expect, the Malamute requires strenuous exercise to stay mentally and physically fit. He was bred to work a regular basis. A Malamute deprived of his genetic heritage will become soft, fat, unhealthy and may become mentally dull or disturbed.
Health Concerns: Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia and luxating patellas (knees) are common with large, fast growing breeds but can be modified by diet and proper exercise. Eye problems (entropion, ectropion, PRA) and other disorders are considered hereditary and puppies should be from cleared parents. Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects. A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
