Airedale Terrier Dog & Puppy Breed Information

The Airedale Terrier’s wiry straight coat, statuesque 23” of solid muscle, and dignified aloofness make him a distinctive family or farm dog. To be properly “dressed” he will need some coat stripping or clipping but owners can manage quite handily. Early training controls terrier dominance.

The Airedale Terrier is from the Yorkshire area but one particular import founded a dynasty in the States.  The Airedale has been used here on large game, in Africa on even larger game, and for police work in both Germany and the U.K.  With high pain tolerance and great determination, the Airedale was even used as a messenger war dog. Airedales are natural dogs with few exaggerations and few health problems.

Coat, Color, Care: Airedale Terriers have a hard, dense, wiry coat which should be stripped (plucked) regularly to keep him tidy, relatively non-shedding, and handsome.  His beard needs daily attention so as not to be distasteful when he kisses you.  He is lighter tan on legs, shading to darker tan, blackish, even grizzled brown on body.

Airedale Terrier Personality:  He is a terrier and a large one at that.  Determined, sometimes obstinate, always proud and dominate, he needs early training and a firm, experienced hand.  With dutiful socialization, the Airedale will accept family pets or livestock but like all terriers, he’s a hunter and will challenge or dispatch that which he considers “fair game.”

Exercise Requirements: The Airedale Terrier will sprawl on the floor while you read or watch TV but was developed to work all day in the field.  Airedales need daily vigorous exercise or they become fat and frustrated!  Trotting beside your bicycle will insure a healthy muscular dog and prevent nervous habits such as chewing or licking.

Airedale Terrier Health Concerns: He is unusually healthy and hardy, living well over a decade with few health problems.  An overweight, poorly muscled Airedale is prone to hip dysplasia and mental dullness.  Dry itchy skin may need attention but like most allergies are usually environmental or dietary. He has few serious health problems, a bonus to owners.
