The Golden Retriever evolved in England, arriving here in the 1920s as a sturdy, sound, hunting dog, ideally in hard working condition. The friendly, intelligent expression and personality soon made him a popular family dog.
Golden Retriever Coat, Color, Care: There is no trimming or special care. The dense, water-repellent undercoat doesn’t mat and the close outer coat doesn’t tangle although the tail and legs are richly feathered. While the golden color may shade to light cream, there should be no white markings or black hair.
Golden Retriever Personality: Goldens are eager to please, alert and self-confident with no sign of shyness or laziness. The Golden Retriever is animated but calm mannered, excellent with children, small animals, and other dogs. Not nervous or high strung, he has a strong desire to work so try therapy, nursing home visits, obedience, or even tricks. He needs purpose and will tackle any kind of job.
Exercise Requirements: Golden Retrievers will chase a ball and relentlessly retrieve anything you lose. The breed thrives on regular outdoor exercise and although a fenced yard will do, Golden Retrievers will never turn down a bicycle jog or a good run in the field which will prevent nervous habits such as chewing or licking.
Health Concerns: The Golden Retriever grows quickly and tends to be overweight without sufficient exercise. Thus, he may develop hip or elbow dysplasia or other bone and joint-stress problems. Goldens are prone to hereditary cataracts and PRA, as well as entropion (the eyelids or eyelash fold inward and rub against the cornea). Heart problems are not common but aortic stenosis is on the increase. The Golden Retriever is long-lived compared to many dogs his size and keeping your Golden fit and active is important. Good diet and freedom from unneeded medication usually prevent food or contact dermatitis allergies.
